Equine Culture of Puerto Rico
Equine Culture of Puerto Rico
The Puertorican culture has many rich aspects, from modern everyday life to Spanish and African traditions. One aspect of the culture that intrigues me is the equine lifestyle. Many Puerto Ricans love their horses. It's a significant part of their lives. Horses have a major role in many cultural activities and festivals.
With so many levels of society that integrate equine sports and culture in their lives, it takes months of meeting people, traveling to farms, stables, and homes, and attending events hosted year-round in every aspect of the equine lifestyle.
My project aims to define the love and use of horses in Puertorican lives. This documentary essay started back in 2013 and has not yet ended.
While the horse on the left is considered a Chongo, she is a great worker. This horse works as a trail horse. She has a foe with similar markings.
The pony on the right is Vieques, she was rescued from Vieques Island and competes in show jumping and dressage, she works as a school horse with children.
